What should a complete RX lens order include?

A practical checklist for the hand-off between an optical shop and a prescription lens lab.

A complete order connects the prescription, design, frame, wearer measurements, material and finish before manufacturing begins.

Keep one clear record

Start with the verified prescription and the intended product and design variant. Record right and left eye details accurately. Include the chosen material, treatment and any use-specific instruction the lab needs.

The selected frame matters. Its shape, size and fit determine whether the lens can be edged and positioned as intended. The shop should send the frame or the frame data required by the current lab process.

Measure for the actual design

Progressive and personalised designs may need monocular pupillary distances, fitting heights and other position-of-wear measurements. The frame should be adjusted before these are captured. Do not substitute a default value without the product’s ordering guidance.

The required fields vary by design. Essilor’s professional fitting guide lists measurements such as vertex distance, pantoscopic tilt and wrap angle for relevant lenses; that is a general fitting reference, not a VisualEyes specification.

Check the hand-off before submitting

Compare the order against the prescription and selected frame. Confirm availability and compatibility of material, index, coating, tint and any licensed technology for the intended market. Resolve a missing field before work begins.

When the finished pair returns, verify it against the order and adjust the frame on the wearer. The lab and the optical professional each own a part of the final experience.

Questions worth asking

  • Is the prescription and design variant unambiguous?
  • Are the adjusted-frame measurements complete?
  • Have material, treatment and frame compatibility been checked?
